The Saints

The Saints are the Northampton rugby team. Having gone through some rough patches, including most recently relegation during the 2007/2008 season (they completed the year in National Division 1 with an unprecedented 35 wins from 35 games), they have rapidly come back through the combined powers of Jim Mallinder, Dorian West and Paul Grayson, alongside a strong combination of youth and experience.

Tigers 11 - Saints 3

A match where least said soonest mended really. Both teams played well, it was tough and gruelling as expected. But poorly let down by officiating, both ref and linesman bowed to the pressure of the crowd. And before you think this is just sour grapes, none of the papers are covering the match itself, simply talking about officials making things up.

Ah well, on to Cardiff and the Heineken final. Last chance for this season.

Saints 31 - Leeds 24

At this point in the season, every game counts. This one would not only decide if the Daints were in the play-offs but also decide if Leeds stayed in the premiership. In some ways the first 20 minutes were predictable. Leeds playing for their lives while the Saints were still coming down off the intensity of last weeks Heineken match. And 20 minutes in the Leeds supporters must have thought it was Christmas. Their team had scored three tries with the Saints only having one penalty to show for a lot of possession. This had the hall marks of an upset.

The Saints pulled it back though. Importantly before the big guns came on they had the match flowing the right way. By the time Dylan, Lawes, Tiny and co came on in the second half, Leeds were finished

Saints 23 - Perpignan 7

The semi-final for the Heineken Cup. Further than last year. And as yet unbeaten. Some saying we've had it easy, but it's never easy to win every match. And the semi is likely to be a real test. The first scrum that is expected to be able to stand up to ours. A home country semi and luckily this means that we play at StadiumMK again. So the lads have a bit of knowledge and have been able to train there.

In the end this was a dominant display by the Saints. There are the nay sayers who comment that Perpignan didn't turn up. The other way to look at this is that the lads didn't let them. Two lovely tries in the first half put the game away and the second half was a display of dominance, although not matched by further tries. In one scrum in the second half, Perpignan dissolved, like the parting of the waves, and that was the sign that they had finally capitulated.

Great match to watch and now to the finals.
